FARMEES' UNION
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the Southland executive of the Farmers' Union was held on Friday, the following members being present: Messrs W. Ford (president), Jas. McKercher, A. I’. Schmidt, W. Adams, T. W. Foster, and W. Forster. An apology was received from Mr Wm. Reid. A largo amount of correspondence was dealt with, and reports from branches were both long and interesting. Since last meeting the follpwing brandies have been formed; Invercargill, Clifden and Orawia, and it is stated that there is a strong membership in each case. A branch at Tc Wae Wa© is likely to be formed shortly, and in other places farmers contemplate the resuscitation of moribund branches. The president gave an interesting account of his visit to the Waiau district, and expressed great satisfaction at the formation of the new branches. A remit from the Wgianiwa branch regarding the issue of excursion tickets was referred to the president and secretary to make full enquiries and report. Remits from Seaward Downs branch regarding the establishment of experimental stud farm in Southland, the appointment of a Government analyist, and the abolition of Layman’s book from schools were referred to the provincial conference for consideration. The annual levy was fixed at S>s per member, being the same as last year. The matter of railway weights was referred to a sub-committee. The date of the annual provincial conference was left in the hands of the president and secretary to fix. with a recommendation that it be held on or about the end of May, and it was decided to hold the annual dinner at the close of the conference. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr W. Darby, of Ohau, for his able assistance in the formation of the Clifden and Orawia branches.
