EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLT MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Southland Education Board was held yesterday. the following members being prosent ;—Mr John Fisher (chairman). H. A. Archdall. J. Gilchrist. .1. Mac Gibbon, A. Lowrie, H. E. Niven, anil J. C. Thomson. M.P. The Assistant Inspector-General of Schools wrote informing the Board that a grant not exceeding £3OO would be available for the year ending March 31. 1917. for the purposes set forth in an earlier communication, i.e. the training of teachers.—Received. An official communication from the Department notified the Board that the Public Service Commissioner had advised that it was not intended to admit female candidates for the public service entrance examination. Received. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. On tbe recommendation of the Executive Committee the following resolutions were adopted ; Pembroke ; Thai the teacher's application for leting residence be agreed to. Slopedown ; That Mr Rogerson's offer of fencing be accepted. Makarewa North : That the school committee be asked to reconsider their resignation. Raymond's Gap : That the explanation of the school committee re not opening school be received. The school to be opened in the new building as soon as possible. Invercargill Park : That Miss Rabbidge be advised to apply for an assistantship. Scholarships : (1) That, while the Board is of the opinion that-Malcolm Robertson did not comply with the regulations when sending in his application, yet the non-compliance was of a technical character, and in view of the further explanation of the Rector •f the Gore High School, the Board is now prepared to award him a scholarship of £3O; (3) that the Board’s scholarships awarded to Irene Preston, Olive Steel and W. PI. Jackson be cancelled; (3) that the secretary explain to Mr McGregor that there are no funds available to increase his daughter's scholarship: that her name was inadvertently included in the list of scholarships. and the Board did not wish to afterwards cancel the grant. Office ; That the Corporation be informed that the Board is willing to contribute £IOO towards the cost of underground drainage, provided that a refund of £75 is made later on. Drummond ; That the headmaster's letter be referred to the school committee and that, subject to their consent, the Board is willing to alter the date of the term holidays and to grant an additional week’s leave to enable him to attend the military training camp. New Schools—Maori Hill : That the Inspectors report he received and referred back to petitioners to enable them to recommend another site. Half-way Bay: That the application for the establishment of a household school be received, and tbe writer asked what contribution lie is prepared to pay towards the salary of the teacher. Hawthorndale : That the offer of the Surrey Park Co. of a site be received, and the writer Informed that the Board has decided to adhere to its previous decision. Browns; That the letter from the residents undertaking to provide a school building be received, and a reply sent that provided the plans and building are approved by the Board’s architect, the teacher will he appointed, White Head: That an application for a household school be granted, the residents to provide a suitable building. Proficiency examinations ; That application be made to other Boards for information as to the method adopted In arranging for proficiency examinations and that further consideration to the question be held over in the meantime. GRANTS. Applications for grants were dealt with as follow :—Balfour : That £3 is 6d be granted for school library, subject to the Inspector’s approval;. Thomson, £lO 10s. TECHNICAL COLLEGE. The principal of the Day Technical College reported that the number of new students enrolled for the session was 93. and the roll number BIG. Four of the senior students who were present at the commencement of the session had since entered into employment. The numbers in the different classes were as follow : Boys. Girls. TI. Trades .. 10 Agricultural . . t 1 II 90 70 100 Miss Gunn had taken up work as instructor in needlework and millinery, and considerable advantage was felt from having a teacher for these subjects on the regular staff. The machinery fur the engineering workshop was now to hand, and the work of erecting it was being put in hand by Mr Newman, with the assistance’ principally of the hoys of the trade classes. Arrangements had been made for the science classes from the Girls' High .School to use the college laboratory on Tuesday afternoon!:. As tbe number of classes as well as of students had increased this year owing to the attendance of third-year students, the necessity for another class room was making itself more felt, and it would he a considerable relief when dhe room at present used on the second door as a temporary kitchen for manual training classes was available for the use of college classes:. The report was adopted. Technical Committee recommended : That tiie contributing local bodies be advised that each body is entitled to appoint one representative to the board of management, and that they be requested to make such appointments during-the present month: that Messrs Lowrle. Niven. Fisher and Wyllie be recommended to the Board at a special meeting on March at * p.m. for appointment as managers of Southland associated classes; that the recommendations of the principal with regard to the granting of free places to Norman Phillips. Frank Wright ami Lily Dykes be given effect to; that as recommended by the principal Miss HcKle's salary be increased to £195 per annum. UNCERTIFICATED TEACHERS. The chairman gave notice of motion to move%t tiie next meeting of the Board : “That in view .of the revision of the list of uncertiticated teachers at next Board meeting tbe attention of rnicertiflcated teachers be directed to the Board's resolution of October, 1910, and that they.be requested to furnish particulars of what steps they have'taken during the past twelve months to qualify for a certificate. That attention

also be directed to the extra help proposed to be extended to them by the Inspectors, and that they be recommended to ttvail themselves of the aid offered by the university correspondence classes and Saturday teachers’ classes; further, that the Board will assist them financially towards the cost of correspondence classes for approved subjects.
