He is an accomplished flautist and. has frequently participated In public concerts.—“ Musical America.” Writes “Tom Tom" in Christchurch Evening News:—Twenty years ago Wellington Garrison > haml. under Lieut. T. Herd, won the ‘ championship at Timaru, .and to the infinite credit of i "Old Tiniaru Garrison,” they journeyed jto the "Farthest North." and won it I hack for the South island. Willi one I paltry exception, the championship has i never got away, from the Wellington land Wanganui Garrisons in all that ’ time. Those gifted conductors. viz.. ! Lieut. T. Herd (Wellington), Mr James I Crichton, -and Mr A. Wade. of Wan- | ganui, have divided the honour for | years mentioned, anil now. congratulations to Mr Archie Schnaek —he put up a brilliant score for the South' Island, in the A grade. In the H grade the Invercargill Hibernian, under the archenthusiast and gifted conductor, Mr K. Wills, won special distinction, and just now the Southerners hold a full hand of musical honours. There is. of course, the usual accompaniment—as is usual at contests —viz., the usual percentage of satisfaction —and dissatisfaction! “'Twas ever thus!” No living man can rjuole a contest yet held where there was entire satisfaction with the verdict. It is tHe same in England, Australia, and Maorlland. .and it is likely to continue so for ever and ever!
