STREET TRAFFIC
“KEEP TO THE LEFT.” TiEPORT FROM INSPECTOR. Inspector Robson reported as follows to the Town Council last evening—l am pleased to report a continued improvement in your street traffic. With a few exceptions the drivers of vehicles and cyclists arc now strictly” observing the rule of the road. In endeavouring to educate the public into this system 1 have gone to considerable trouble to avoid prosecutions, many of the public not being aware which was their proper side. As some time lias elapsed since this was introduced, and notices are now up in conspicuous places, this excuse can scarcely be entertained. 1 propose therefore to take action against anyone commuting a breach of this bylaw from Hits; on. One dozen of "Keep to the le ft" notices have been procured and placed in suitable places as instructed and on the advice of the engineer another dozen have been ordered. These will ho placed at various points on the tramway routes. Welsh's Corner. I wish to draw Council's attention to the grave danger of the ear stopping in Conon street at Welsh's eorner. The people have a habit of standing in the street and wheeled traffic lias a difficulty in getting through. 1 would suggest that the Stop for the outgoing car be in Tay Street. This would relieve the congestion at the corners and there appears to he sufficient room for the oar driver to •ee down Conon street. Time to Light Wheel Traffic. —Another matter that 1 consider requires attention is the proper time to light vehicles. etc. As tilings arc at present drivers light up almost when they please. I would suggest that the Council fix on certain hoars for each month. Indistinct Numbers. —.Vs there are several cats and motor cycles in use with their numbers indistinct., or placed in Such a position that it is difficult to see. I find it almost impossible to secure evidence to prosecute and wottld make the following suggestion—-"That all cars and .motor cycles be compelled to report for inspection periodically." In conclusion I place before Council a diagram showing how the street corners should be turned by wheeled traffic. It may be of some value to some of the Council. 1 am quite confident it would he instructive to the general public if published, as there are many who do not yet understand how the corners should he turned: they keep on the left until they come to the corner and then cut ■across. The report was referred to the Works’ Commit tec.
