EX-CONVICT'S FRAUD

Hugh Dalrymple. an ex-convict, sued Baroness von Goetz, a wealthy philanthropist and organiser of a farm for discharged prisoners, to recover money lent. Dalrymple alleged that lie loaned the Baroness money. He produced scores of Hie Baroness’s letters containing terms of endearment. During a sensational cross-examina-tion counsel proved that Dalrymple was convicted of frauds on women in 3S9fi. In order to explain discrepancies in the letters Dalrymple alleged that a twin brother was responsible. Dalrymple's counsel threw up his brief and a verdict was returned tor defendant. The judge impounded 100 letters, which were obvious forgeries. Evidence was given that the Baroness had £40,000 in the bank at Hie lime of t.ie attempted blackmail.
