THE WOOL MARKET

TIMARU SALE. (Per United Press Association.) TIMARU, January 25. The largest wool sale so far held in tills district eventuated on Saturday, when 15,300 hales were offered. Jfhe sale commenced at 7 a.m. with an hour for breakfast, and all but the star lots were disposed of by 12.00. There was a good attendance of buyers—English, Continental, American, and dominion. The sale proceeded briskly. Prices showed a considerable diversity, consequent on the difference in condition. Ranges were:—half-bred, Od to 11 %d; three-quarter-bred, Od to 1.1.1/6 d; crossbred, S“id to 10'/id; bellies and pieces, 5y 2 d to Syqd: sandy, SOid to oV£d ; crutchings, C/id to 7d; merino, lOd to 1314 d. BRITISH MARKETS. LONDON. January 24. Received January 25, 5.5 p.m. For wool there is a strong Yorkshire demand, and all prices are well maintained. At the wool sales tHe following prices were realised for the fleece portions of the undermentioned clipOrakei, top 13 13 d, a verage 12”4 d. - LONDON WOOL SALES. INCREASE IN PRICES. A PROMISING OUTLOOK. LONDON, January 25. Received January 26, 12.15 a.m. The wool sales closed with prices at the highest point during the series. Russia, throughout, has given good support, and the Yorkshire and American demand was strong for good, sliafty sixty-fours. Prices for greasy combing advanced five per cent,, crossbreds, fine, 7% Per cent., finest, 10 per cent., and scoureds are unchanged. Compared with prices at last sales, slipes which were inferior declined a halfpenny. In view of the relatively low level of value for tops and yarns, the keen demand for wool has surprised the trade. The hosiery industry; however, is very prosperous, and merino fabrics are in strong demand. A large depletion in stocks of tops is expected before March, and a good American demand for crossbreds during the coming months.
