His many friends In this district will be glad to hear that Mr John Findlay, district manager of the Government Life Insurance Department in this province. has been transferred to a similar position in Auckland. The change means substantial promotion to Mr Findlay, upon which lie will receive the congratulations of his friends in bowling, cricket and private circles. Mr Findlay will probably leave Invercargill early in February. A London cablegram says that Commander Gordon’s death, recorded yesterday, was due to a chill contracted during the search for the submarine AT. A Tauranga telegram announces tiie death of Mr G. A. M. Davidson, Chairman'of tiie Harbour Board and formerly, for eighteen years. chairman of tiie Tauranga County Council. He was a successful farmer, and had been for over thirty years in the district. A Christchurch message states that the Hon. .fames Allen went south to attend the University Senate and banquet to Sir Joshua Williams. He returns to Wellington In ten days to map a programme .for his .visit to schools preparatory to drafting the Education Bill. He said the talk of an early election was piffle. The Hon. R. H. Rhode’s references were made jokingly. The Prim" Minister would rest in his owfi constituency,, hut would tour the dominion before very long. A New York message states that the Duke of Artmo, aged 24, has become engaged to Frances Hanan. aged . r >4, the American philanthropist. , Sir Joseph Ward will leave Wellington for Auckland in the course of a few clays. He intends shortly to deliver a public address on the political situation, but definite arrangements have not yet been made as to the place or date. Lady Ward Is spending a few days in Christchurch.
