The Japanese steamer Inaho Mam. -Which towed off the Tasman through the agenev of Pilot Wilson, is credited with one of the finest saves ever recorded on the Australian coast. The Tasman and cargo were valued at two hundred thousand pounds. Her position was a dangerous one. and she escaped as the result of careful handling, with small damage. BURNED AT SKA. CREW RESCUED. WASHINGTON. January S. The German barque. Eilbek. lias arrived with the captain and crew of British collier Battle Abbey, which was burned at sea in December. When the coal ce.rgo. ex Newcastle and New South Wales, for Vancouver caught fire it burned for a week before the crew took to a whale boat. Three days later the Eilbek rescued all. Captain Marsters. interviewed. said that the Battle Abbey made a fair passage until three weeks out. Then the coal caught on fire. The flames were fought for days unsuccessfully, then the crew took to the boats. The first boat ■was smashed at the ship’s side. The second was stove in. but the third saved them. At early dawn they put off oceanwards, seeking the nearest land. They were then rescued by the Eilbek and taken to Astoria. Tii captain believes that the ship has been blown up ere this owing to the huge quantities of gas generated in the hold. The captain’s wife and two daughters were on board. DASHED UPON THE IIOCKS. OTTAWA. January 9. One hundred labourers were crossing the Fraser River, when the boat was caught bv the current and dashed upon the rooks. Seventy-five of the men, •who could not swim, w'ere drowned.
