HEDDON BUSH. . The annual picnic and prize distribution took place on Friday. 19th Dec. Though the rain poured clown unceasingly and many had miles to travel, all the children, accompanied by several friends and parents, braved the storm and helped by their voluntary contributions of handfuls of silver and kind assistance in games (racing, jumping, skipping, tug-of-war, etc.) to make this function a success. If the weather had been fine the attendance would undoubtedly have been a record. The chairman, Mr D. F. Clark, assisted by Messrs Cowie, Shaw, Mackintosh, W, Watson and J. Boyle, jnr. kept things going with a vim. Mrs Andrews, as usual, presented lollies and the ladies provided all kinds of delicacies.

The chairman complimented the teachers and children on the success of their year’s work and exhorted them to make the best of their school days. He was pleased to see so many first and second class attendees, some being debarred through the prevalence of an epidemic. Mr Mackintosh referred in terms of praise to the position the school holds and wished teachers and pupils a pleasant holiday. Both speakers were glad that the increased attendance warranted the retention of Miss Sutton’s services. The pupils gave a few musical items and recitations before the prizes were given out. The breaklng-up of the school for the holidays took place on the'afternoon of Thursday, ISth inst., and,'for' a small country school. It was marked by a pleasing ' demonstration of interest by the school committee. On the occasion It was decided to present each child with a handsome bound and suitable prize book,- for it was recognised that the giving of prizes or certificates for good attendance at country schools is a most unfair system where distance from the school, impassable roads, unfordable rivers, and sickness may militate against regular attendance. Proficiency also should never be awarded a prize In a school. Prizes may justly be given for good conduct, attention, obedience, ana kindness, although these qualities are as a rule the outcome of favourable home circumstances. Mr G. A. Scott, chairman of the school committee, after presenting the prizes, gave a very Instructive and encouraging address to the children, and congratulated the teacher and pupils upon the excellent progress made during the past' year. He referred to the fact that during the past twenty-one years the school had had twenty teachers and had been closed frequently for, lengthy-periods so that fair progress in the past .had been impossible. Mr AA r . Lambie also briefly addressed the scholars. Songs were heartily sung by the pupils, cheers lustily given for the teacher and committee, and an interesting ceremony, which will ever linger In the memory of the pupils, was brought to a close by singing a verse of the National Anthem. On leaving the school each pupil was prese’nted with a nice bag of lollies, and all scampered home joyfully in happy anticipation of a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. ' TOKONUI.
