THE FISHERS
OPENING DAY WITH ROD AND LINE. Encouraged by the good reports which have lately been circulated regarding the prospects for the angling season, a large number of anglers left town yesterday for the various rivers in the surounding district of Invercargill. A number also left town on Tuesday evening-in order to be on the rivers during die first hours of the season. So far it has been impossible to ascertain many of the results of the night fishing; but reports which came in early in the day had it that the conditions on the Waihopai and Waiklv/1 were unfavourable after sunrise, the light being too brilliant, and the wind veering in the wrong direction. More satisfactory reports came from the Oreti later In the day. Despite a touch of snow water, there were some good bags taken, and the anglers were for the most part satisfied with the day’s sport. Mr J. Von Tunzlemarm, while fishing at the Iron .Bridge, caught twelve fish, the aggregate weight of which was between 18 and 201hs.
Fishing at Otatara Mr E. Keast made a very fair catch, including two particularly fine fish; one turning the scales at T'/ilbs, and the other being well over 31bs weight. Other good catches are reported, and some good-sized fish should be on exhibition to-day. The good reports have been largely confirmed, and experienced anglers may look for a good season. Anglers are reminded of the annual meeting of the xVnglers’ Club to be held in Allen's Hall on Friday, October 3rd, at 7.30 p.m., and also that the social function, which was to have followed the meeting, has been cancelled.. .
