SOUTHLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL REPORT. Following is the annual .report to be presented to the annual meeting on Tuesday evening, 30th inst.: — On behalf of the Management Committee I beg to submit the following Report and Financial Statement for the season 1912-13; — Financial Position. —The receipts for the year were £173 12s 9d, which, however, included £1 11s cash balance from 191112. The expenditure was £l6B 19s 4d. Of this 19s 5d was a bank overdraft, £2O rent due for Rugby Park, £7 13s 5d printing and advertising, 13s 6d water rates—a total of debt from last year of £29 6s sd. In addition £1 2s 6d has been expended for the concert to be given on September 10th. Crediting the £1 11s, cash in hand from 1911-12, my committee has had to make up £2B 17s lid for 1911-12. In the Assets Account there shows £42 10s Id. the expenditure to date on Rugby Park £67 6s 6d, not having been included. The liabilities £4B 7s. Including £47 11s 6d rent and proportion of gate receipts due to the Rugby Union, show well when compared with the realizable assets, and the concerts to be given in town and at Walklwi should put the new executive in a good financial position. Committee Meetings.—The last season was heavy on the members of the Executive, much extra work having been entailed through the picture and the concert efforts. The regular meetings of the Association were well attended, and the interest of committeemen was distinctly heartening. Twenty-five meetings were held and these were attended as follows: —Messrs T. D. Kingsland (1), W. M. McLean (2), S. Mackie (12), C. Gardiner (13), P. Dalrymple (19). H. Morrison (21), J. S. McGrath (23), C. Patton (22), J. Gilbertson (17), A. Derbie (21). and Hon. Secretary (22). Club Matches. —The Senior Competition was won by I.C.C. with Appleby runners up, and the Junior Competition by Appleby Juniors. The revenue from these matches was £2O 12s.
Representative Match. —The annual fixture Southland v. Otago was played at Rugby Park on March sth and 6th, and resulted in a draw. First innings— Southland 16G, Otago 117; 2nd innings— Southland 151 for 6 wickets (declared); Otago, 99 for 3 wickets. Batting for Southland. J. A. Doig made 42; D. Hamilton ('captain), 28 and 57; A. Eastern District Sub-Union. —Two matches were played by town against Eastern District, the first at Rugby Park on December 11th. and the return at Wyndham on January 22nd, only the former being finished. In it the SubUnion made 69, and Town 171 for 7 wickets: Bannerman 47 (retired). Irwin 58. Ward 19. Poole 17, Doig taking 5 wickets for 7, and Ward 2 for 11. School Cricket.—From the report of the representatives of this Association on. the Schools’ Executive the position and the government of Primary and Secondary cricket is excellent, and my executive hopes to see representative games initiated for the improvement of players in these grades. Hawke Cup.—As you know from very full newspaper information, this Association did not enter for the above contest under tlie tournament system. Xo game took place in the South Island, as Xelson, Soutli Canterbury, and Southland hud withdrawn. Marlborough played one match at Hamilton. South Auckland winning. On demand of the Xew Zealand Cricket Council, the Hawke Cup was sent to Christchurch to be handed over to Soutli Auckland.
Umpires.—Owing to the absence,- of the hon. secretary of the Umpires' Association. my executive took over the appointment of umpires for Senior matches. Its thanks are especially given to Messrs J. E. Taylor and A. Ball for their unstinted services.
Rugby Park.— ET was spent on the improvement of the pitches in 1912-13; £29 13s was expended on implements and material; these have been marked as assets. The caretaker (Mr T. Battersby) continues his excellent service, his skill being evident in the quality of ttie pitches provided for club and other matches.
Plunket Shield. —After careful deliberation my executive, seeing the uselessness to this province of the Hawke Cup competition under any conditions, gave notice of motion to the N.Z.C.C. for the admission (ft Southland to the Plunket Shield matches, and it is to be hoped that the decision of the delegates at the annual meeting. September Sth, will be favourable. General. —I have to express the thanks of the Executive for the groat assistance given to our funds hy the local bands, and to Messrs S. Wootton and J. A. Crawford for their capable organising of our successful concert on May 28th. from which a nett profit of £2!? Is resu 1 ted.
The- T.M.C.A. has continued its kindness in permitting us the use of rooms for regular meetings as well as for the extraordinary ones necessitated by the endeavour to raise funds, and to it our best thanks are due. The local papers have been more than kind 10 cricket 'and cricket matters, their columns aiding us in our Hawke Cup trouble and in our concert, while the regular attendance of reporters at the weeklv meetings tended to keep plavers fullv in touch with all matters of iota! interest. My executive wishes to thank heartily those officials.
