Market steady white; little demand coloured.” DUNEDIN MARKETS. ■ GRAIN AND PRODUCE. DUNEDIN. May 17. There Is very little change to record in the local oat market. The only present outlet for our oats is the North Island, and there is very little inquiry from this quarter. It would appear that North Island buyers have filled their requirements in the meantime. Farmers in the south now seem more Inclined to accept offers from shippers, but the whole position of the market may be summed up in the phrase that oats are "hard to buy and hard to sell." There is no inquiry from Australia, where the prices ruling are on a lower parity than those recorded in New Zealand, and Dunedin merchants would be prepared to do business on a basis of 2s 6%d for A Cartons and 2s Slid for B’s (f.0.b., sacks in). Business has been through at about these prices, but only for small lots. Notwithstanding the broken weather, large supplies of chaff are being forwarded to the local market, the Ashburton district being responsible for some heavy consignments. All prime samples are readily disposed of, but inferior lines are hard to quit. Prime heavy oaten sheaf, £4 5s to £4 7s 6d; medium to good, £3 to £3 10s; inferior, £2 and upwards. The prevailing bad weather has caused deliveries of potatoes to fall right away, and this has caused a temporary advance in values. Melbourne advices state that very heavy crops of potatoes are being dug there, and that merchants will have to get a wonderful export to keep their market clear. Sydney advice, under date May S, is to the effect that the market there is very heavily stocked with Victorian and Tasmanian tubers. Largs yields are now being dug in the New South Wales country districts —up to 10 tons to the acre. Our cable advice received yesterday states that the Sydney price for Tasmanians is £6 10s to £7 10s. Prime Oamaru, freshly dug, £4 15s; medium, £3 15s per ton (bags in). MINING NEWS.
