MONTIII.V -MEETING. The monthly meeting of the High Schools Board of Governors was held in the Education Board Office last evening, when the following members wore present:—Mr IV. Macalister (Chairman), and Messrs R. A. Anderson. A. K. Hawke, and J. C. Smith. The Principal of the Boys’ High Sphool (Mr T. D. Pearce), reported that the roll stood at 140. J. He respectfully submitted that the expenses Incurred in attending lids Conference should he paid by the Board. The latter matter was referred to the chairman. Miss Johson, Principal of Ihe Girls' High School, reported that the school reopened on February Ith with an attendance of Hill pupils, of whom 4 1 were newly enrolled, as compared with 52 last year. The roll number was. however, about the same as in 1912 and It'll. Miss London entered upon her duties as junior assistant on file same day. and was proving herself an acquisition to the staff. She had undertaken the superintendence of the school game- In the capacity of sports mistress, and was giving willing and energetic assistance in that department with the result that considerable improvement was already evident in'the girls' tennis. When recording the results of the 1912 examinations in her last report she had not the complete returns of the junior civil service examination. They had since received information to the effect that thirty-eight out of thirty-nine candidates for the Girls’ High School were successful, one girl. Edna Sutherland, being the only Southland candidate to obtain a place in the first hundred. Two others passed with credit. She regretted, however, the general tendency to consider success in this examination sufficient to warrant a successful candidate at once taking up teaching. A girl who did so must labour under serious disabilities with regard to the teachers’ examination, and her success as a teacher, and she tried to discourage her from applying wherever possible. Both reports were adopted. ' Intimation of the grant of £96 11s 9d for free place pupils was received from the Department. The Invercargill Football Club made application for the use of the High School gymnasium for training purposes during the winter months. The gymnastic instructor (Mr Galloway) reported favourably, and the application was granted. The Railway Engineer (Mr A. ,T. McCredie) wrote asking the Board's consent to plant willows on one of the Board’s endowments in order to protect the railway embankment at Oarston. The letter was received, and It was decided to raise no objection subject to the tenant's consent being received. Messrs Rout and Stewart reported on the Board’s rural endowments.—Received. A number of requests re leases were held over for further consideration. The modified plans and specifications for the girls' hostel were further discussed, and it was decided to go on with the work.
