FRUIT FARMING
NOT A GOLD MINE. (Per United Prcs-s Association.) DUNEDIN, March 27, To-day Mr Wm. Lowe, .secretary for the General Otago Fruitgrowers’ Association, made a statement referring to a speech made by Mr McDonald. President of the New Zealand Association of Nurserymen at the conference of nurserymen in Auckland on Tuesday, in regard to the returns secured from the fruit growing industry. Mr McDonald mentioned the case of an Otago grower who last year secured a gross return of £2OOO from a fruit farm of 12 acres. Mr Lowe said that it was too tall a stony to ask anyone to believe. "We want to warn the public against being misled by reports as to tiie results obtained from fruit growing. We have written to the press in times past about similar reports. This statement by Mr McDonald is pretty far-fetched. We want to discourage people from going in for fruit growing on areas from which they will not get enough. The story that a man made a £2OOO gross return from 12 acres is inclined to mislead people, and we are determined to guard them against this sort of thing."
