SENTENCED TO DEATH

RECOMMENDATION TO MERCY, (By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright), SYDNEY, March 27. Williams Adams lias been sentenced to death, witli a strong recommendation to mercy, for feloniously wounding Lilian Lambert with intent to murder. Adams was engaged in the horse trade and had been shipping horses to the East and to South Africa, and had also acted for the Federal Government in the Northern Territory. He only returned to Sydney on Christmas Day, and after spending New Year’s Day at the races had tea with his parents and went out with the announced intention of taking Mrs Lambert, who was his cousin, to-the theatre. The next his parents saw of him was at 2 a_m., when he returned home and said to his mother, “I have shot Lilian, and now I’m going back to shoot myself and join her." He left his money and watch and chain with his mother, kissed her, and went out of the house. On the ground where the shooting occurred the police found a bracelet, which Adams had given Mrs Lambert two years ago, when she was Miss Lannen. The inference is that in the course of her explanation the bangle was offered back to Adams, and by one of them thrown down.
