THE SLAUGHTERMEN'S DISPUTE
START AT OAMAUU. (Per United Press Association.) OAMARU, February 10. The local killing works will recommence on Wednesday with a fair board of hands. WORK T.\ THE NORTiI ISLAND. HASTINGS, February 10. The butchers manning the hoards at Tomoana put through 1000 sheep on Friday. and 150 for the half day on Saturday. Thirteen butchers are slaughtering at Pakipukl, and applications for hooks continue to come in freely. The firms speak in high terms of the work of the new butchers: every day sees marked improvement. In appreciation of Hie stand taken up by the Hawke's Hay Freezing | Works Industrial Union of Workers in | connect ion with Hie strike Nelson Bros., Ltd., Tomoana, Thus. Borlhwick and Sons. Ltd., I’aklpaki. and the North British Freezing Co., of Napier, have decided to adopt the rat-'s of pay provided for in the award now operating at Gisborne. Tills amounts to an increase in Hie wages of 10 jut emit, to till members of Hie Union. The new rale of pay will come into force as from Monday w;;l. but other provisions of Hie present award will be adhered to till the agreement expires in Bill. NOTHING DOING IN CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH. February 10. A rumour that was Hying about to Hie effect that the freezing works at Belfast ami Islington would open to-day or to-morrow appears to have no foundation in fact. The freezing works officials in charge of the works had received no intimation in regard to this matter from headquarters, and so far as they knew there was small prospect of killing commencing for some time yet. There is little doubt that up to the present Hie supply of labour coming forward has been comparatively small. At any rate, it is not yet sufficient to warrant opening up at the works for the recejition of stock, but Hie jirobahility is that directly tbe supply is sufficient the work wiH he started, even if the output is small at the beginning. POSITION AT GISBORNE. GISBORNE. February 10. At Kaiti freezing works to-day there was a board of eleven slaughtermen, and five more will commence work to-day. Taruheru works started to-day with i t men. The Freezers’ Union to-night decided to adhere to the former decision not to strike.
