December IT j An unknown man assaulted a Kiri, ' JJyrtle Huff, aped 11, at Santa Anna, California, and then escaped to the bills, where he was pursued by a party of sheriff's deputies. Tiie ruffian was fully armed, and when the pursuit came too close upon him In* took coyer and tired. Under-Sheriff Robert Squires was shot dead amt three ether deputies were wounded. The pursuers at last surrounded the man in a small canyon. By that time a force of 200 men had Joined in the chase, and the man was caught like a rat. He fired away most of his ammunition, hut the pursuers made a concerted rush, and turned him out of his retreat. His body Was riddled with bullets. ________ i
