At the Southland Bowling Club's social on Wednesday evening, two presentations were made. On the occasion of ills marriage,-the treasurer, Mr G. Flnlayson, received from the club members a casp of cutlery. Mr W. Willcox, who has been transferred to the Telegraph Department at Oamaru, was presented by the club with a pair of handsome silver-plated cruets. The executors of the late Harry Ricka*ds. of theatrical fame, paid £l-5,283 stamp duty on the Now South Wales portion of the deceased's estate, the net value of v. hich was estimated at £153.857. Dord Victor William Paget, brother and heir-presumptive to the Marque - :;-; of Anglesscy, is engaged to marry Miss Olive May. of the Gaiety Theatre. Miss Olivo May is playing the pan of Lady Rosabelle Morrydew, Lord Bicester's fiancee in the new Gaiety piece. "The Sunshine Girl.” Last year she pluyed the part of Doris Bat tie. in "Peggy." and earlier played the leading part irt "Our Miss Gibbs" during the absence of Miss Gertie Millar. Lord Victor Paget, who was born in LSS9, was educated at Eton and Sandhurst, and is now a Lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards. He is an ardent sportsman and motorist. The local Post and Telegraph staffs will tender a social to Mr J. L. Bush, until recently officer-in-Charge of Telegraph;; at Invercargill, on Saturday evening next in Miller's tea-rooms. - The King has (says a cable) accepted a small gold shield, subscribed for by members of the Church Army, mostly in pence, inscribed:—"With gratitude' to God for the protection of your Majesties during the Indian tour.".
Dr Amundsen will, says a cable, como to New Zealand next week cn route to Buenos Ayres to pick up, the Drain. Bishop Julius and Mrs Julius. of Christchurch, have started on a nine 'months trip to England. A Sydney cable states:—Air DacCy, State Treasurer, died suddenly this morning. He was removed to-a private hospital yesterday suffering from something thought to be acute rheumatism, and it fatal termination was not expected. The Labour cause loses in him one of its most prominent and stalwart supporters. A Capetown cable states that Sir Thomas Sinartt has been unanimously elect.ed leader of the Opposition in succession to Sir Leandef Jameson. A London cable states that Captain J. Morrison, Unionist member for Nottingham. hast resigned on account of illhealth. The Governor has (says an Auckland telegram; no public engagements for the next few days. If the weather is suitable he will leave for a cruise in his private yacht on Saturday. Preliminary measures have been taken towards the tendering of a citizens’ compiimontary ball to their Excellencies.
