Amendments to the Workers' fompcnsation for Accidents Act were discussed at the Trades and Laimur Council's Conference to-day. It was ivsolvod dial the Act be amended in tile direction of nullifying any agreement that may lie entered into with any Insurance Company and any person entitled to compensation. Several speakers stated that frequently workers were induced by representatives of Insurance Companies to sign away part of their rights. it was ah-o agreed that the Act he amended to take away the power (Tom the .judge which allows him to withhold compensation unless the patient -übmtis to the use of an anaesthetic for - tho purposes of an operation.. A fur i her motion was passed as follows:—“ That, in the opinion Of this Conference, the whole of the insurance business in connection with tho Workers' Compensation Act should be taken over by the State."
