Very little interest was taken yesterday in the poll to decide whether op not Invercargill should have an up-to-date sewerage system, to begin with, ip tiie inner are:;. The proposal before the ratepayers of that part of the town was that fXl.nOti should lie borrowed to provide a modern system of drainage in the eentre of the town. The polling at the T e.vn Malt was very slack during the day, hut it livened a little towards evening. In all, however, only I,IS votes were east, out of a voting number of (177. The proposal was carried hy a majority of £S rotes. The following are Ihe details of the poll; For the proposal .. .. 123 Against . . . . . . .la Informal . . . . . . 0 .Majority for . . . . SS Total number on roll . . 677 The result was made known from the Town Hall .shortly before 7.1 a p.m. The .Mayor, in announcing the result, said that he felt pleased that the ratepayers had sanctioned a proposal, which would make for the substantial progress of the town. The work of installing the system will he put in hand as soon as the Town Engineer has completed the plans and specifications, which should be within a week or two. When these are available, tenders will bo called, and it should then be only a matter of a few months before the system Is established.
