MEETING OF CREDITORS

—ln Re Albert John Scott. — A meeting of creditors in the estate of Albert John Scott, sawmill worker of Orepuki, was called for yesterday afternoon by the Deputy-Official Assignee (Mr C. B. Rout). The only persons in attendance, however, were the Assignee, the bankrupt, and the bankrupt s solidtor (Mr W. G. Tait). No meeting was held, therefore. Bankrupt’s liabilities amount to £lls 3s lid, and his assets (consisting of furniture) to £2O, leaving a deficit of £96 3s lid. The principal creditors are— Dr Trotter, £l2; Wallace and Whelan (drapers). £10; Connor and Co. (storekeepers), £10; McPherson Bros, (butchers) £10; M. Moncur, £8; Wallace H. and C ' Board, £4; E. Patchett, (Invercargill) £3; F. R. Bailey (Riverton), £4; Dr Line (formerly of Orepuki), £4; G. B. Hutchins (chemist), £3; T. J. Howard (Te Was Wae). £3; J. Stephens (Riverton), £5; C. E. Johnstone, £3; M. McCallum," £4; J. Lyle (Riverton), £3. The bankrupt submitted a sworn statement to the effect that he was working for the Southland Sawmill Co. at Waimeamea. The greater portion of his indebtedness was incurred about two years ago He was married about three years ago’ and was solvent at that time. About a. month later, when "working in Mclntyre's sawmill, he lost two flngeis front his lefl hand and was away from work for seven months. He received £64 as compensation, but ibis was paid away foi’ current expenses while he w&s still unable to work. The amount did not cover expenses and he got behind. His position had since become worse. His wife was in bad health and had been in the hospital for five or six weeks about six months ago. The cost of living was very high, butter Dicing as much as 1/6 per lb. and other necessaries of life equally dear. He was now earning 10/- per day and had been in steady work fof the past ten months. He was out of work for two months at Christmas time. He had two children. He was not in a position to offer anything to his creditors as it took him all his time to meet, current expenses. He had been, compelled to file owing to creditors pressing for payment, and had had to obtain an advance to pay his filing fee.
