BLUFF SPRING SHOW

AN INTERESTING DISPLAY. The annual spring show of the Bluff Horticultural Society was held at the Drill Hall yesterday and proved to be one of the best the Society has ever had. There was a very fair attendance of the public In the afternoon, and the hall was packed In the evening, thus ensuring that the function will be a financial success. The opening ceremony was performed by the Alayor (Air E. A. Nlchol), who congratulated the club both on the quality and quantity of the exhibits, remarking that a number of the exhibits would hold their own in any show in the dominion. The judge of the floral section was Mr L. Lennie. He said that the daffodils made a brilliant display and were certainly far the beat Bluff had ever had. For quality many of the blooms could not be surpassed, and it was an interesting fact that daffodils were fully a fortnight earlier at Bluff than in Invercargill. He made special reference to a ’’Glory of Leyden.” a trumpet narcissus exhibited by Airs S. Nichol, and to this bloom he had given the championship prize, the runner-up being Air H. Z. Chapman. He also made special reference to the decorative section, in which there was a wealth of daffodil-; and other spring flowers. In the children’s classes he thought highly of tiie wild flower exhibit, which, in his opinion, the Bluff children had greater- opportunities than their Invercargill confreres.

The judges In the cookery and Industrial sections were Mrs Walter Henderson (Invercargill) and Mrs C. E. Graham (Bluff). This is the first occasion on which the cookery section has been included in the Spring Show, and the Judges remarked on the numerical strength of the section, and upon the uniform excellence of the exhibits themselves, making special reference to the fruit cake, sponge sandwiches, and the home-made bread. An excellent feature of the show conslslted of a number of arts and crafts exhibits of a very Interesting nature. The exhibitors in this department, were Mesdames Captain Stewart, Walter Henderson. H. Hamilton, Moody, C. A. Tipping, and Miss McKay. The following comprised the prizelist : Daffodil Section. Collection of Narcissi (one of each variety)—l, Mrs H. Z. Chapman: 2, Mrs G.
