FIRES

(Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 20, Four out of the live houses destroyed by fire at Hataltai, Kilbirnle North, last night, were owned by Bird Bros., and insured for £3OO each in the Alliance. The owners state that they are heavy losers. The fifth house owned and occupied by Gilbert flail, of the Union Company’s repairing 'staff, was not insured, nor was ills furniture covered. The Phoenix Co. had a risk of £75 on the furniture belonging to O'Kano, who was one of Bird Bros.' tenants. It is not known whether ii. Godfrey’s furniture was insured. A four-roomed cottage on tiro Vellow Bluff road, North Otautau, belonging to Mr James Dickson, baker, Otautau, and occupied by Mr A. Miller, luislinmn at Messrs Bird and Swhan's mill, was totally destroyed by (ire about I o’clock on .Monday morning, together with all the contents. Mrs Miller anti family left the house on Friday for Riverton, where one of the children is under the care of Dr Trotter. Mr .Miller was in the house on Sunday, when lie left to stay the night with a relative. No fire had been lit since Saturday evening, and the cause of the fire is unknown. The building was insured for £(10 in the Guardian Office, and the contents for £7 a in the New Zealand Co.
