The Union Steamship Co.'s cargo Steamer Kaituna arrived from Newcastle at 10 a.m. yesterday and commerced discharging 700 tons coal. 2000 sacks fertiliser, 060 feet timber and 650 bags bonedust. Site is to sail to-night at 10 o'clock for Oamaru. The s.s. Manuka, from Sydney via Northern ports, berthed at 3.15 yesterday.. She discharged the following Bluff cargo ; 332 sleepers. 26 bales shafts, 36 sacks spokes, 96 naves, 1600 feet timber, 40 bags sand, 1500 sacks manure, 14 hogsheads ale, 60 cases benzine, 43 packages soap and candles, 58 cases canned goods, 30 eases ale. 35 cases bensine, S7 cases jam and 60 boxes butter, 6h 3 sailed at 3.30 In the afternoon for Melbourne via Hobart, taking the following cargo : 9700 feet timber, 200 Backs oysters, 200 cases fish, 100 sacks ca ;s, and 54 cases scenery. The s.s. Moana. after a fairly wintry trip from Hobayl, missed the morning title and did not berth at Bluff until 3.4 5 yesterday. She landed 38 ingots tin, 34 bales cassia, 95 bags onions, 2791£ cases fruit, and 1104 bags superphosphates. She sailed late last night for Dunedin, after loading 3000 ft. timber, 200 bags oysters, 160 sacks linseed, 179 cases preserved milk, 70 sacks wheat, 260 bags potatoes, 183 sacks giass-seed, 1080 sacks oats. She should reach Dunedin at mid-day to-day. According to the London Shipping Gazette, the well-known Clan Line is about to fit six of its large steamers with insulation for the carriage of fxozen meat. It is understood that the vessels will be those which during the Australian wool season load Home regularly from Commonwealth ports. While steamers are carrying grain from New Zealand ports to England for I>s per ton. it is interesting to note that the sailing ship Penrhyiv Castle has been chartered to load wheat at Sydney for the English Channel for orders at 27s 6d per ton, the highest rate paid for a sailer for a long time. The Union Company has let a tender for the building of another cargo boat Similar to the Kowhai. but 10ft. longer. She will be built by Ramage and Fcr- ' guson. of Leith, who built the Kanna, and will be In New Zealand about March cf next year. The new steamer will carry 1100 tons, steam 10Va knots loaded, and be suitable for working light-draught ports. This is the fourth boat that the company has building at Home, and in addition there is the Port Kingston (renamed Tahiti), which was purchased from the Eider-Dempster Line, and is to leave Home for Sydney t.nd New Zealand in a week or two. Summary and forecast ; A good and general rain has fallen in most parts of the country, hut much snow has fallen on some of the higher levels in the South Island, and hail, thunder ami lightning have also been experienced. A westerly storm area has blended with a cyclonic movement and the winds have been strong and variable. Present Indications are for southerly gales in most parts of the country, heavy rain and snow on the higher levels in the South ; expect colder weather and the barometer to rise fast soon. A WARNING. DUNEDIN, Sept. IS. Mr Paulin issues a warning to all shipping along the East Coast of the South Island, and states that there will be heavy gales from the south and south-west and very stormy weather generally.
