A RISKY ATTEMPT
LAUNCH SWAMPED AT SUMNER. (Per United Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, September 16. The motor launch Kingfisher, owned by Beswick Bros., was swamped on Sumner bar ttiis morning. The launch was taken round from Lyttelton yesterdry, but the bar was dangerous and she returned to port. This morning she appeared again off Sumner, evidently with the intention of going across the bar. A strong nor’-wester was raising a big roll; the signals were against her, and the pilot endeavoured to make it clear to the crew that a crossing would be extremely perilous; but the crew decided to take the bar and stood in. When the launch was fairly in the roll a big wave curyed over her, stopping the engine. The crew cast anchor. The Snmney. lifeboat was promptly manned and put off, and tiip crew were taken ashore, with some little trouble. The launch had to be left at anchor, and this afternoon she was just floating. It was thought probable that when the tide went down she would bump heavily and that she might easily be wrecked.
