SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS

MEETING OP LOCAL BRANCH. A meeting of the members of the Southland Branch of tlie New Zealand Society of Accountants was held in Allen’s Hall on Saturday afternoon. Mr W. A. Ott (the local member on the N. Z. Council) presided. Mr Ott intimated that, owing to pressure of work, both public and private, he would be unable to offer himself for reelection to the N. Z. Council. At the same time he took the opportunity to thank the members support they had given him during the time he had had the honour to represent them. Nominations were called for representative on the N. Z. Council, and on the motion of Mr J. Cunningham, seconded by Mr W. F. Scandrett. Mr H. R. Spence was recommended to the Southland Centre to fill the position. That gentleman’s nomination paper was, therefore, filled up and forwarded to Wellington. It may be mentioned that nominations for position on the councU close in Wellington on 20th July as already advertised. The only other business transacted at the meeting was the acknowledgment of a letter from the head office, Wellington, notifying that a grant of' £so'hAd made to the local centre to cover expenses for the year ending 30th June, 1912; alos intimating that a sum of £25 would be Immediately expended in the establishment of a local llbfary. Now that funds are assured it is the Intention of the local committee to proceed with —-T jga the formation of an Accountant Students’ Society at an early date. Those present at the meeting expressed appreciation of the hard work done by the retiring delegate in organising the new Society, and regret that Mr Ott found it necessary to give up his work on the General Council of the Society. It was felt that Mr Ott had been the one persent In the district willing to sacrifice time and expense in the futherance of the accounting profession.
