INVERCARGILL COMPETITION

COMMITTEE MEETING-. The fortnightly meeting of the Invercargill Competitions Society, holdfast night, was attended by Messrs C. A Longuet (chair), G. Brown, A. S. Wallace. C. Campbell. R. J. Gilmour, Vg Quinn. R. B. MeKuy. It- W. McKav, 1-. Brookesmith, E. G. Liggins (secretary), and in- .1, G. Mtu-donald. Apologies were received from the Mayor (Mr W. A. tilt) and Messrs G. Cruicksliank and It. J. Wesney, -Ml- L. E. de Berry, Grevinoulit, wrote in response to the secretary s roqne.-t giving full information as to books tor recording judge's marks and comments. Mr de Berry "heartily congratulated the society on having secured the services of Mr E. N. Baeyert/. as Judge. Mr G. N. liaeyerlz wrote suggesting that the song for the tenor competition should he at iced to "I'll sing thee song--, of Araby" (the highest setting), instead of Tschaikovvsky s ' too late, and that the hitter should be made the mezzo-soprano selection in place of Spohr's "Uo.se softly blooming." .Mr G. It. George wrote pointing out that the duel selected for lady and gentleman, "When the wind blows in from the sea." was published in one selling' only, for soprano and baritone, which practically excluded tenor voices fiom the competition, —Mr Baeyert/. suggested that the selected duet should he retained and that the duet from "II Trovatore" should be added as an alternative. —Approved. The sub-committee reported that they had invited Mr -Max Seherek (Dunedin) to act as judge of piano and violin competitions, ami Dir .Seherek wrote accepting the appointment, and submitting a list of suggested items for these classes.—Mr Scherek's appointment was confirmed and the list of items was referred to the sub-committee for consideration. The Southland Society of Professional Musicians wrote offering a gold modal, value £2 2s, as a special prize for the open pianoforte competition, and the offer was accepted with hearty thanks. Messrs Gluts. Begg and Co. wrote offering :t Bechstoin upright grand piano for the use of the society during the competitions. Offer accepted with thanks. The Town Clerk intimated that the Council had acceded to the society's request for a concession of one-third of the rental of tlie Theatre and Victoria Hall during the competitions.—Council to be thanked. With regard to the "Best Half-Hour's Entertainment," substituted for the "Drawing Room Entertainment” of previous years, the sub-committee appointed to frame conditions recommended that one stage setting should be provided for the use of all competitors, and that competitors should be required to submit a synopsis of their proposed entertainment for the approval of the committee a fortnight before tiie date of the opening of the competitions.—Recommendations adopted. Mr E. E. Thomas wrote stating that lie would be able to act as official accompanist at both the evening and afternoon sessions.—Appointed accordingly. Mr D. W. McKay intimated that lie would undertake to obtain two additional special prizes for the society’s list, and -Mr C. S. Longuet offered a special prize of £1 Is to be used at tit e committee’s discretion. —Accepted with thanks. With regard to the championships, the secretary pointed out that competitors had been allowed to adopt for "their own selections" items which they had given earlier in the competitions, and in regard to which they had had the benefit of the judge’s marking, criticism and advice. Tltose who wore in this position had an advantage over other competitors who had not been previously judged in their own selections. —It was resolved that candidates for championship honours must give as their own selections items in which they had not previously been judged. The Secretary intimated that the amended prize-list provided for prizemoney to the total amount of £125, exclusive of the choir competition, for which the prizes amounted to £l2 12s. It was resolved to arrange for the entertainment of the judges at some time during their visit to Invercargill, and the meeting terminated.
