WANGANUI HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS. WANGANUI. March 17. The Harbour Board Engineer and the Harbour-master went out on the bar at high water this morning and made very careful soundings, as a result of which (they found a record minimum depth of not less than 18 feet in the centre of ■the fairwav. Another satisfactory feature disclosed by the soundings is that the water is deepening between the moles now in course of construction, owing to the lowering o fthe bar and the concentration of the ebb tide between the moles. This is an improvement of two feet on last soundings, taken a month ago. The Engineer states that the increased depth is due entirely to the Influence of the works, the concentration of the channel over the bar. and increases in scour occa-’ Bioned thereby without any assistance from flood waters. The Engineer expresses the opinion that a further increase of two feet may be expected very shortly as the works are pushed out further. SUBSIDISED JAVA-AUSTRALIA LINE HAGUE, March 16.
