ABOUT PEOPLE.

1 Mr E. B, Patrick, who recently resigned from a position on the Magistrate's Court staff in Invercargill to enter the Kiverton office of Messrs Armstead, Hunter, and Tail, was met by a party of Association footballers last night, and entertained at a social evening in Uaesddo's rooms. Mr Patrick has been in the front rank of the enthusiasts who have kept Association football alive in Invercargill, and hi.s efforts as secretary of the Invercargill Association ICC., and as delegate and Vice-president of the Southland Footbail Association, have been keenly appreciated by chibnmtes and players generally throughout Southland. The gathering held in his honour last night was representative of all the local clubs, and the complimentary references to the guest of the evening were wholehearted and (to a modest man) embarrassing. Mr J. IJowie presided, and Mr A. Macklani, on behalf of the Association footballers of Invercargill, presented Mr Patrick with a well-appointed reading chair, an appropriate gift for a bachelor student. Mr Patrick acknowledged the present in a short speech of thunks which revealed a deep sense of the kindly feelings that 'prompted his football comrades to wish him prosperity in his future career. To an enjoyable musical programme, after supper had been served, songs were contributed by Messrs A. Macklani, It. Hamilton, J. N. Chilian, J. Howie, and P. ilayne. air John Peddie, who has been resident engineer for the Mataura paper mills for a number of years, has been appointed Director of Mechanics at the Canterbury College, and on the eve of liis leaving the district the employees of the paper mills met to bid him goodbye. Mr John Hosien. on behalf of the employees, presented Mr Peddie with a microscope, and Mrs Peddie with a gold brooch, and in doing so made reference to the great interest Mr Peddie had taken, not only in his own work at the paper mills, but also in matters affecting the welfare of the town. He thought the Canterbury College directorate showed good judgment in selecting Mr Peddie as their mechanical instructor. Mr Peddie, on behalf of himself and Mrs Peddie, feelingly replied.-—Own Correspondent.

Mr A. Young, head-master of Bluff School, has resigned from his position. The Education Board, in accepting the resignation at yesterday’s meeting, recorded its appreciation of Mr Young s long and faithful services in the cause of education. Mr Young is retiring under the provisions of the Teachers’ Superannuation Act, and his resignation will take effect from 31st March next. In his intimation to the Board to this effect, he said: “In resigning my position in this school I wish to express my gratitude to the Board and its officers for the courtesy, consideration, and appreciation shown me during a long term of service. My connection and relations with the Board, under which I have been so fortunate as to spend the greater part of my life, will be a pleasant memory to me in the days to come." Mr J. M. Ritchie (General Manager of tlie National Mortgage and Agency Co.) and Mrs Ritchie are just now in Invercargill. A cable states that Melba, recovered from her illness, lias returned to London. Says a London cable : —Miss Zena Dare, the actress, married Maurice Brett, Lord Esher’s second son, at Paddington ' registry office on Monday. It was intended to keep the marriage secret until Miss Dare’s theatrical engagements had concluded, when she will leave the stage. News comes by cable of the death of the Rt. Hon. Sir Charles Dilke, M.P., who was Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, 1880-82; President of the Local Government Board, 1882-85: Chairman of the Royal Commission fo; Negotiations with France, 1880-82 ;Chairman of the Royal Commission for Housing of the Working Class, 1884-5. and Chairman of tlie Select Committee on Income Tax. 1906. Sir Charles was the author of numerous books on political and other subjects and was an outstanding figure in British politics. The cables advise us of tlie death of Dr J. B. Baton, M.A., D.D., Emeritus Principal of the Congregational Institute for Theological and Missionary Studies at Nottingham. Dr Paton, after a brilliant scholastic career became an extraordinarily active worker in religious and other matters, and was the founder or assisted in the founding of the system of university extension and various institutions for social welfare. He was at different times Joint Editor of the Eclectic Review and Associate Editor of tlie Contemporary Review, and lie was tlie author of a good many published works, dealing mostly with church matters.
