THE LABOUR CONGRESS. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, Jan. 27. At the Labour Congress a motion that the full rights of citizenship be granted to women received a majority of one vote, but was ost as it required a twothirds majority. A motion to limit election expenses to £IOO was negatived. It was decided that the hours ofr voting at Parliamentary elections should be extended. ANNIVERSARY DAY. SYDNEY. Jan. 27. The Anniversary Day holiday was spoiled by incessant heavy rain. The single sculls race at the Anniversary Regatta was won by T. Kemp (scr), S. Pearce (35secs behind) 2, Fogwell (40 secs behind) 3. The naval brigade and fire brigade crews annexed the service whalers' race. All other sports, including Eandwick , races and inter-State cricket, were postponed. LONDON, Jan. 26. Sir George Reid addressed the London Chamber of Commerce at a meeting to celebrate the anniversary of Australia. He recounted the pastoral, agricultural, and financial progress, and also quoted Messrs Fisher and McGowen’s statement with reference to peopling Australia. There was a very large assemblage, over which Lord Desborough presided.
GOLD EXPORT AND IMPORT. MELBOURNE. Jan.27. Gold imported into the Commonwealth last year was valued at £1,031,439, and the export at £4,738,147. FEDERAL NOTE ISSUE. MELBOURNE. Jan.27. The number of Federal notes Issued to date is 1,550,376, and the value £3,076,691. W. A. UNIVERSITY BILL. PERTH, Jan. 27. In the Assembly Mr Underwood, a Labour member, discussing the University Bill, condemned spending money on teaching classics and tnuslc. They did not want Latin. There was nothing in Plato. University men were always in the rear. It was easier for a porcupine to go backwards through a canvas hose than for a University man to go into politics. The University Bill has passed its third reading. NEW PEARLING REGULATIONS. PERTH, Jan. 27. The Department of External Affairs is informed that pearl-fishers’ future permits for the introduction or re-en-gagement of indentured labour will lapse after two years, and he renewed only on condition that the diver and tender in the boats on which they are employed are white men. The regulation has caused consternation.
