THE RED BILL

There lias been some doubt among shooting men as to whether the Oyster Catcher Maori name (Torca, scientific name Hoematopus Longeristis), knownlocally as the rod bill, is really protected. At the last meeting of the Southland Acclimatisation Society the question was raised and, after discussion, tlie Secretary was directed to communicate with the Minister of Internal Affairs. A reply came to hand at last meeting' which shows conclusively that the red bill is among the list of indigenous birds absolutely protected. The official memo says:—"Re Oyster Catcher —All indigenous birds are protected under section 10 Animals Protection Act of last session.” The section reads as follows: "Every person who destroys, or injures, or captures any bird which is indigenous to New Zealand, or who robs or destroys the nest of any such birds, is liable to a fine not exceeding £20.” In view of the fact that these birds have been taken during previous seasons, the foregoing Information will be of value to those who are going out for the opening of the godwit season next Wednesday.
