HIGH SCHOOL BOARD

The monthly meeting of the High Schools' Board of Governors was held yesterday evening, and was attended by Mr W. Macalister (chairman), ami Messrs A. F. Hawke, K. A. Anderson, J. Crosbv-Smith, and W. A. Ott. The Hector of the Boys’ School reported that the roll number was 133, one boy having left to go to work. The attendance during November had been excellent, the average being 132. The date of the annual break-up of the schools was fixed for Friday, 9th Dec., the ceremony to be held in the Municipal Theatre at H p.m. The Revs. J. W. Shaw and IV. Grigg will be asked to present the prizes, the former to the boys, and the latter to the girls. Short speeches (this point was emphasised) will be given. Other necessary arrangements iu connection with the break-up ceremony were left in the hands of' the chairman. • , , A cabled intimation from Miss Jobson. of Melbourne, accepting the position ot Lady Principal at the Girls’ School, was laid on the table. It was resolved that applications be invited for the position of assistant teacher at the Girls’ School, at a salary of £l5O per annum, preference to bo given to a teacher with special qualifications in mathematics. It was further decided that the salaries of the three junior teachers in the Girls’ School he increased by £lO per year each as from Ist Feb. next. A report was received from Messrs Hawke and Anderson in connection with various properties vested in tire Board, and certain recommendations were made with regard to terms of lease and amount of rental to be asked for. The report was referred to the Board’s solicitors with a view to ascertaining whether the recommendations could bo legally carried into effect. A communication from Messrs T. M. Macdonald and Sons with regard to survey of lease run 211, was referred to the chairman with power to act. It was decided that steps be taken to have the insurance policy on the recently acquired Tay street property taken out in the name of the Board. Accounts to the amount of £636 6s 2d were passed for payment. .
