Mr A. Wells Newton, of Wellington, the surveyor undertaking the subdivision of the Five Kivers Estate, is in town making arrangements with the Survey Office about commencing the work. Some time back, for the first time in twenty years a marriage was celebrated on The Neck. Stewart Island. , Mr Geo. Goodwillie, of Longwood, and Miss Klizabeth Grace Wixon. of The Neck, were joined in holy matrimony by the Ttev. H. B. Goertz, vicar of St. Andrew's Church, Half Moon Bay. A New York cable announce* the death Of Mr Michael J. Henry, railway builder. Mr Pointing, camera artist with the Scott expedition, is a passenger by the Macedonia, en route to Xew Zealand. He brings the most perfect photographic equipment, and hopes to secure, amongst other spoils, records of the Antarctic natural colouring on autochrome plates. Mr Franklyn Barrett, of Bathe Freres, who made a number of friends during his stay in the Dominion, has, on his return from a tour of the South Sea Islands for cinematograph subjects, received notice of his transfer to America. He will bo stationed in Xew York for five years. Theatregoers will be interested to know that Miss Nellie Stewart will be In Invercargill early in November, when she will probably appear in " When Knighthood was in Flower." Chief Justice De Villiers, of Capo Colony, who was recently created a baron of the United Kingdom, has taken the title of Baron I)e Villiers of Wynberg. Captain Kendall, of the Montrose, has been granted £USO, the reward offered by the authorities of Scotland Yard for evidence leading to the arrest of Crippen.
A Vancouver cable states that Sir William Van Home has voluntarily resigned the chairmanship of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Pacific Railway, but remains on the Board. Sir T. G. Shaughnessy was re-elected president. A London cable states that it is officiary announced that Mr C. M. I,ush •will succeed Justice Jelf. of the King's Bench Division, who has resigned.
Mrs Ewen, wife of Rev. T. Keith Ewen pastor of the Baptist Church. Brooklyn (Wellington), died yesterday, aged f>2. The deceased was a native of Montrose, Scotland, where she conducted a lagged children's school. She left Montrose for Australia in 1532, and for years took an'active part in social and rescua work In that country, and on many occasions she occupied prominent pulphs there.—Press Association.
