MATAURA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mataura was en fete on Wednesday, the occasion bing a fancy dress football and a hockey match. A procession started from the Square headed by the Mataura pipe and brass bands. The procession consisted of all manner of fancy dresses, in every variety of colour and style, some of the dresses of the ladies being quite grotesque. The Pine Band led the way to the ground playing a march, and on arrival the Brass Band made its first public appearance, since its reconstruction, and played several items. The first item on the programme was a fancy dress hockey match, both ladies and gentlemen taking part, and in which all manner of implements wore used as hockey sticks, and the incidents of the game provoked roars of laughter. The second part was a fancy dress football match. in this game there was some good play, but belltoppers. crinolines, and aprons got sadly mixed up to the amusement of the spectators. A mimic circus of three horses and a clown played a very prominent part in the day's amusement. The object of the entertainment was to provide funds to carry out improvements at the Recreation reserve. There was a large attendance, the gate money idealising £l7 5s . The committee, of which Mr C. M. Inglis is secretary, deserves the thanks of the sporting fraternity and the public generally.
