THE U.S. BUSH FIRES
(By Telegraph—Press Assoriation—Copyright). NEW YORK. Aug. 24. Two hundrer women fought the flames at Elk City for twenty-four hours and succeeded in saving their homes. TIMELY-SNOW. NEW YORK, Aup. 25. Received Aug. 25. 7.25 p.m. Heavy snow in Missoula district has assisted to quench the fires. The long immunity which the Bluff township has enjoyed from fires was terminated yesterday morning, when an alarm was raised about 1.30 a.m. The fire was located in the shop and bakehouse owned by Mr I. L. Petrie and occupied by Mr P. Denton, in Gore street. The fire had evidently started about the bakehouse chimney, and had smouldered long before bursting into flame. The Fire Brigade was early on the scene after the alarm and speedily subdued the blaze and prevented further damage. As it was, the back portion of the building was completely gutted and the stock in the front'shop considerably damaged. Mr Denton had insurance for £9O in tlie Alliance office on the stock, and Mr petrie £l5O on the building in the same office. The latter estimates his loss at from £l5O to £2OO above the insurance.
