The comtdainant was a vounf woman who lived with her parents in North Invercargill. Stic was in service with a resident in Spey street, and it war her custom to so home every night and return to her work on the following morning. On Thursday morning last, about eight o'clock, she was making her way from homo as 'usual, across her accustomed track through Queen's Dark, when she was slopped by a, man believed to be the accused. He made indecent overtures to her. and when these were indignantly rejected, be savagely assaulted her. The girl resisted desperately and successfully, and the assailant desisted and made off when other users of the track across the Dark came in sight. The matter was duly reported to the police and enquiries were instituted with the result that suspicion fell upon the man now under arrest. The police wished to get bold of him without making enquiries al his residence during bis absence, and thus passible causing the accused to tie. pul on his guard. They therefore kept a rare fill watch upon the house tin Kelvin road I \\ i 11 1 a view to in 1 ereepl ing him. Veslerday morning Detective Cameron and two const aides were in the neighbourhood of the house lie fore live o'clock. and the accused was arrested Just as he was leaving about an hour later. He is al present In custody and it is understood that an application for hail will be made this morning.
