AMERICA
THE COMING OF SOCIALISM THE RAILROAD SITUATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright). NEW YORK, June 6.. (Received June 6, 9.30 p.m.) Mr Taft, speaking at Jackson, Michigan, said that Socialism was the great problem confronting America. The issue soon to come must be skilfully met. Mr Taft’s action against Western Railroads is due to their filing collective schedules of increased rates, indicating concerted action, possibly so called conspiracy. Eastern roads have been spared because individual schedules have been filed; nevertheless Eastern support Western in the controversy. The New York Central announces the cancelling of orders for £600,000 worth of cars, the postponement of improvements costing £1,600,000, and the discontinuance of negotiations for the sale of Michigan Central bonds in Paris for £3,500,000. The Great Steel Companies announce that the prices of steel will be increased to railroads if freight rates advance.
