PTJBE POOS. ■[(Per-'XJnlted. Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 29. 'At the Magistrate’s Court to-day E. H. Crease and Co. were fined 40s and costs for having sold;pepper adulterated with starch. S. S. Patterson, for having sold baking powder containing a greater proportion of sulphates than is allowed by law, was fined 20s and costs. S. AlcKelvle was fined 20s and costs for haaring sold milk adulterated with water. FARMERS’ PZBE INSURANCE. ELTHAAI, April- 29. •The fifth annual report of the Taranaki Farmers’ Mutual Fire Association shows that the premium income for the year amounted to £2-201 7s 3d, being £27 2s Id in excess of the total for the previous year. Insurance liability at the close of Hie year (March 31) amounted to £189,600, against £194,103 at the close of the previous year. Policies number 723, at an average of £262. Fire losses for the year totalled only £lB 30s, • The cash reserve amounted to £2458 3s 2d, being £909 13a 7d in advance Of the figures for the previous year. Premium notes in force amounted to £9438 17s 7d at the close of the year, an increase of £O3l 7s 4d. Premium rates will be lowered as from Ist April on ordinary first-class risks from 10s to 8s per cent, rates on first-class dairy factory risks Bs, second-class 15s, third-class 20s. At a meeting held to-day the retiring directors were all re-elected. Satisfaction was expressed with the present position, and the belief was voiced that the reduction of premiums will result la increased-business. A JEALOUS CHINAMAN. WELLINGTON. April 29. Jim Wong Sin was arrested to-day and charged with having seriously assaulted Young Kec In Plaining street. It is said that trouble arose through Jealousy in regard to a white woman who had been living with Sing. She went out in a,,motor car with Kee. On their return Sing got very angry and felled Kee to the ground witli an iron oar. Kee, who appeared to be badly hurt, was taken to the hospital. LADIES TAKE UP KNYVETT CASE. AUCKLAND. April 28. A crowded meeting of ladies was held In the Art Society’s rooms this afternoon in connection with the Knyvett case, Mr C. PI. Poole, M.P., and others a poke. In order to provide the necessary funds to enable the facts of the case to be put before the whole of the Dominion, the ladies decided to take up a street collection on Saturday, May 7th. The speakers laid stress on the fact that they were fighting In the hope that Justice would be finally meted out to Captain Knyvett, and the ladies decided that “ justice ” should be their watchword and that the badges worn by the collectors have that word printed on them. __
