TOKONUI RAILWAY LEAGUE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The quarterly meeting of the Tokonui Railway League, was held on 12ih Inst., the chairman, Mr Earwaker, presiding. Air Earwaker stated that work was moving satisfactorily on the line; all the cuttings were fully manned. It is pleasing to know that work is progressing vigorously along. There is £30,000 voted for the work which probably means another large unexpended balance at the end of the year, as only £35,000 was spent last year on the Gatlins—Waimahaka railway. Correspondence from Mr Malcolm stated that a Bill had been passed authorising the construction to Tokonui. The station will be at the 32-mile 57 chain peg, and he proposes to address the Tokonui people on Tuesday, 22nd Inst. Plate-laying was discussed, one member stating that a gang could do a mile a week. Mr Holms gave an instance of a North Island railway length of seven miles that he was connected w’ith being started in April and opened for traffic in December, which the meeting considered good going. On the Tokonui station site men and teams are at work, with camps studded over the paddocks, giv.ing the lino a business-like appearance. Air Ur quit art and others spoke favourably of the vigorous prosecution of the work. Since the meeting-the secretary had received the following memo, from the Assistant-Under-Secretary; “I am directed by- the Minister of Publip Works to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 2Sth ultimo., enquiring when the plate laying on the above railway extension was likely to be started, and in reply to state -that steps have already been taken to procure the necessary" rails for the portion of the line on which formation is approaching completion. As soon as the rails come to hand, the question of putting the platelaying in hand will be dealt with.
