WOMEN'S EMPLOYMENT BUREAU

The Auckland Bureau report for last month states that applications had been received from 251 employers, and applications for work from 66 women. Many extra girls are engaged at this season at Rotorua and other tourist resorts, where they are offered better wages. Their fares are paid to the districts, and they make a good deal by way of tips. In reference to the women who apply for employment, there is always during the course of the month a small percentage who are utterly incapable, and the office cannot take the responsibility of sending them to work.

At Christchurch, 90 people applied for employment, and 225 employers asked for workers. A great many inquiries have been received for machinists, coat and skirt hands, girls for laundries and pickle factories ; also foe shirt-making. Wages for domestics in town range from 15s to Cl, and girls for the country cannot be induced to go under any circumstances. Three-quarters of the applications received for generals are not filled owing to the dearth of girls.

In Nelson it is very difficult to get domestic workers at this time of year, when there is a great demand for raspberry and hop-pickcVs, and girls are glad of the change from the ordinary domestic routine. Fifty applications were received for workers, and sixteen for work.

Dunedin had 114 applications from employers, and G2 from people seeking work.

Wellington reports that two Homs voxels, the Ruapehu iiml the, Tahuti, liad been met. Only five domestics from over-seas were assisted during the month. The applications received thorn this source, wore very few indeed. In one particular case a new arrival possessing excellent testimonials stated tlial she would not take any position under ft! per week. it is, very unlikely tlitu her expectations will be realised. Many o fthe applicants are not earnest in their desire to obtain work, especially amongst the generals ; and others, owing to various reasons, principalis as to eliaracler. could not possibly Ire recommended for situations. Tills in part, explains the discrepancy between ihe number of applications from domestics.and the number assisted. AH who applied could generally have been assisted but for the reasons slated.
