BOUTHLAZTD MABATHOH BACB. RIVERTON TO INVERCARGILL. The committee of the 'Union Harriers have decided to hold a Marathon race onSiWednesday, 14th July, and they are at the present time taking steps to work up an Interest In the event sufficient to ensure its unqualified success. The course that has been chosen will be from Riverton to Invercargill, and will be 26 miles In length. Tills race. It may be mentioned, will be the first real Marathon race run In New Zealand, that which was held at Auckland recently being only over a distance of 15 miles, while the Ashburton race was only over a 13-mile course. The Rlverton-Inver-carglll contest will be open to all amateur runners In New Zealand, and already promises of support have been received from old Southland runners. An entrance fee of 2s 6d will be charged, and the business people of the town will be asked to give financial assistance to the project. Altogether there are bright Indications that the enterprise of the local harriers In tills respect will result In a notable athletic event being successfully organised. OOLF. The first men’s foursome of the season was played yesterday, when twenty players took part. The game was played as much as possible over the olj course, which added to the length and interest of the rounds. The foursome was won by Kingston and V/obb (handicap 11) with the excellent nett score of S5. Banks and Cochrane (handicap 3) came In second with 87. utter state tennis. LATEST RESULTS.
