FIRES.

THE PALHEBSTGY BLAZE. (Per United Press Ahcoclztlcs.) PALMERSTON NORTH, April 28. Shortly before midnight last night a fire broke out in Malcolm's furnishing warehouse in the Square, starting In the workshop at the back, where there were large quantities of varnish. For some time the blase was confined to one corner of the building, bat columns of black smoke rising fiom the roof told the hold the flames ha/t within. The brigade commenced operations from the rear and, though at one time it looked as if the Ore would spread, they managed to confine it to Malcolm’s premises, which ■were practically destroyed at the rear. Che frontage being less damaged. The whole stock, valued at £4OOO, was sorkxisly injured by fire and water. The brigade worked hard and well, but not fm abotrt one a.m. was the fire ex.tingnished. The building belonged to Mr Childs, cl the Commercial Hotel, who only recently acquired it. It was insured for .£750 In the Alliance. The stock was Insured for £lßso—£soo each in the New Zealand. Norwich Union, and Standard offices, and £350 in the Alliance. The. Standard newspaper office next ‘door was uninjured. STORE DESTROYED. GISBORNE. April 28. Mrs Reid’s store at Toioga Bay has been destroyed by fire. Nothing was saved. The cause is unknown. Insurance: £6OO on the stock in the Norwich Union and £250 on the building in the Liverpool, London and Globe. A DWELLING. ASHBURTON, April 2S. A house owned and occupied by J. H. Stewart at Chertsey, was, with the contents, in the temporary absence of the occupants, totally destroyed by fire this morning. Only a few articles of clothing were saved. It is understood that the house was insured In the Norwich Office for £225, but the loss. Is considerably above tbis. TERABIT BLAZE. TTMARU, April 27. The Insurance on Radcliffa’s facto it were £3OO on the stock and £350 on the building. The loss is estimated at £l5O on the building and £IOO on the stock.
