LAWRENCE - ROXBURGH
OTAGO’S OPTION. (Per Unite. Press Association.) DUNEDIN, April 28. Sir Joseph Ward told the RoxburghLawrcnce railway deputation that the Cabinet had considered irrigation in Central Otago. The Government of the day had been forced into the prosecution of the Otago Central line on promises that it would be revenueearning, but now the other railways were being saddled with the Otago Central’s deficiency. He hinted at the probability of the imposition of a higher railway rate in Otago in justice to the other railways of the Dominion, TJie Government was willing to build the Roxburgh railway if the people of the district were prepared to guarantee the difference between the interest and the cost of construction and revenue returns. The responsibility was too great for the Government to sanction the further prosecution of the work without consulting Parliament.
