MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

MR. LONGUET MAYOR. RECORD YOTING. AND SEVERAL SURPRISES. The unusual interest evinced in the municipal elections this year was evident yesterday by the brisk ply of vehicles to and from polling booths, and by the uncommonly large crowd of people who awaited the results until 11 pan. in front of the Town Hall. The crowd, despite the rain, formed a solid phalanx right across Tay street, and the announcement, shortly after 8 o’clock, of the poll for the Mayoralty was received with enthusiasm. Tiie number of interested people increased in anticipation of ihe declaration of the other poll, and though the record numbers of the poll ■made the wait a long one, the people showed rare patience. There was some restlessness when 10 o’clock came with--'•ul any sign of announcement, and this, as is the way when numbers of people are congregated, developed side incidents which served to psiss tiie time and to preserve the good humour of ttiosc who waited. The most notable of these inciivnts was a stump speech Lo the assemblage by Mr P. Anderson, who dilated •n municipal matters, touched on trie zreadnough t oue.-iieti, addressed some words of encouragement to the Mayor■lcct and voiced his ..nn political aspirtrions with a Hueney and assumption of mock modesty that admirably served the mended purpose of keeping tito people ’ram wearying. Eventually at 11.15 p.m. b - Returning Officer and assistants con- , iuded ti-etr very heavy task of countag a lev. r.l poll of 2057 votes, and Mr t’. W. It was half-past eight before tiie returns at the north polling booth were ready for the Returning Officer (Mr A. J. Ball) to announce the results to a large crowd of waiting ratepayers. In view of the proximity of tiie late Mayor’s residence the announcements were received quietly, and, the candidates having thanked the electors for the varying measures of support accorded them, the gathering dispersed after a vote of thanks had been accorded the Returning Officer.
