We had recently to chronicle a. large haul of fish at Horse Shoe Bay, and on Tuesday morning that locality wa.s visited by a alioaf of irevulii so illicit that, to use the expression of one of the lucky lis-hcrnKii. "Vou could walk on :h<■in." .'des.rs i'i'./..-dininons, and party suet-ceded in lining two craft, the Violet ami Mystery, io the gunwale, and it is computed ilia: they secured oxer ten iotis of liiu iis’.i. These were brought over to market yesterday at Bluff and wc understand the financial result wa.s over £6O. Messrs Pasco Bros, inform us that they have received a communication from their Bluff agent stating that a small ((uantily of mutton-birds, imtn fresh and salt (Mi former and 300 latter) have arrived at the Bluff and, are being sent on here by the morning train to-day. At the Supreme Court at Wellington yesterday Charles Balter, whoso case formed an inlerostirg phase of the session of the Apr obate Court last week, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. Baker had written to friends in Wanganui giving particulars as to the way to dynamite safes. Mr Wm. Handyside, manager of the Xigli leaps Coal Company, Ltd., has just carried out an exceedingly interesting and successful experiment. At every coal mine a quantity of coal is wasted in the form of dross or dust whicli has no marketable value. Mr Handyside sept forward a sack full of this dust from the Nightcaps mine to the Vivian Briquet te and Coal Co., Ltd., Wellington. The company converted the dust into eggettes or ovoids, rather smaller than tlio average lion’s egg. These ovoids consist of the useless dust and some ingredient to give it cohesion. That these ovoids are spit ndid fuel was demonstrated by two fires which wore burning in the local office of the Nightcaps Coal Co. yesterday. Those tires had been Bell ted at 8 o’clock in the morning la the ordinary way, and at 10 o’clock they wore still burning strongly, giving, out an intense heat and leaving an exceedingly small residue of ash. Fires made of these ovoids arc undoubtedly cleaner, brighter and hotter than those in which ordinary coal is burned, ami these experiments show clearly that if the ovoids can he put upon the market at a reasonaide price enormous quantities of coal dust that lists hitherto boon regarded as waslo will he converted into a fuel of considerable value. The following sentences have been passed by the Supreme Court at Wellington:—John Gordon Goofier. theft from the person, three months; Wm. H. Doreen, nine months, and Albert Doreen, six months, on three charges of theft from a dwelling at Napier; Herbert Barron, breaking and entering, three months; William .Tames Miles, theft of a trap and harness at Waverley, was admitted to probation for two years, and ordered to make restitution. The municipal election has resulted in a great change in the personnel of the Invercargill Borough Council, four of the last Councillors having retired and three having been defeated at the poll. A member of the Timber Commission Informed a representative of die Wellington Post that he had been greatly surprised at the progress made by the town of Invercargill. One of the two new railway mail vans recently constructed. each 50ft. in length, was run on the north line on Friday (states the "Press”). Those have been specially built to meet the fast increasing work of the postal service. They have been fitted with special conveniences and incandescent lighting wi’h five superior lamps, gas being likewise supplied to the wax-heating pan and to a smaller jet also used for melting the sealing-wax. Tiie sorters' table is replete with every requirement, and there are plenty of pigeon-holes for the reception of letters for the many station . at which mails are left. Special provision has been made to protect tie, windows with guards, and to secure the locking of the entrances. The public will ..:;d the posting-boxes much easier of access than was the case with tie old mail vans, the boxes being now placed in the centre of the van.
