BOWMONT STREET HOME.

SOUTH SCHOOL’S POSITION. Some time ago the Committee of tho South School wrote to the Charitable Aid Board complaining of the use of the Bowmont street home as a fever hospital. Since the sending of the letter the Committee has received a reply from the Board informing them that their communication would be considered at next meeting. Consequent upon this, and with a further hope of strengthening the chances for removal of the hospital, at the meeting of householders In connection with tho South School last night, a resolution was carried bearing out the action of the Committee In the matter. Mr A. Bain, In speaking of the matter. said that It would bo in the interests of the children to have the patients removed. Mr Petrie: As Chairman of the Charitable Aid Board why did you give permission for the patients to be placed in the Home? After Mr Bain had stated that, as the main hospital was full he had been approached In regard to the Bowmont street site and had consented to the use of one of the rooms for fever patients, Mr Petrie still asserted that he (Mr Bain), .aid he alone, was responsible for the present position. Mr John Stead, as a member of the Southland Hospital Trust, had something to say In regard to the matter. At the time Mr Bain was approached the main hospital was full with scarlet fever patients, and consequently something had to be done to cope with the overflow. Mr Bain, as chairman of the Charitable Aid Board, was approached, and, although he was not at first in favour of the proposal, he had at last granted permission to use one of the rooms at Bowmont street. In all these doings common sense had been used, and It would have been inlvman, considering the state of affairs, not to have acceded to tho request. Mr Petrie: You could have erected an annexe at Lorre Farm. Mr Bain; The patients might have died on the street before that could he done. Mr Petrie: The hospital is there. Finally it was decided to write to the Board informing them of the householders’ resolution approving of the previous letter sent by the Committee.
