JThompson, M.P. EXECUTIVE REPORT. Appointments, Leave, etc. The following appointments have been made ;—Wallacetown, Duncan McKenzie (sole teacher) : Win ton D.H. School,' Helen Dalrymplc (special assistant) ; Fast Gore, Harriet Robertson (third assistant) ; Bluff, Isabella F. Barron (fourth assistant) ; Waituna, Henrietta Romans (sole teacher for six months) ; Waikawa Valley II (household school), L. Ferguson (temporary sole teacher) ; Balfour, Helen Grant (temporary mistress) ; Gore, Arthur Martin (acting pupil teacher) ; Invercargill South, Elizabeth Metcalfe (temporary pupil teacher, second year) ; Invercargill Middle, Mary Brown and WinnilTed Froggatt (acting pupil teachers); Waimumu, Wm. G. Mchaffey, junr. (temporary sole teacher) ; Beaumont, Rosie O’Brien (temporary sole teacher) ; Colac Bay, Annibel Dale (temporary mistress) ; Gore, W. A. G. Martin (third year pupil teacher) ; Invercargill Middle, Annie Ross (fourth year pupil teacher) : Winton, Grace MeOlymont (temporary pupil teacher.)

Leave of absence was granted to teachers in the following districts ;—Sandstone (six months from 16th May) ; Waikawa Valley household school (till 30th April) ; Avondale (six months.) The matter of appointing a temporary mistress at Colac Bay was left in the hands of the chairman, and the opening of the aided school in Pahiwi district, as sanctioned by the Board was deferred and the appointment of a teacher cancelled in the meantime. APPLICATIONS GRANTED.

T’-e committee recommended that the folio. ring applications be granted : Walmatuku (half cost drainage, total not to exceed £2); Otautau, (half cost erection of a pump at £3 10s) ; Waikaka Siding (half cost supply of a globe at £1 10s) ; Forest Hill North (half cost barometer, thermometer, and wall cards, total cost not to exceed £2 10s) : Oteramika (half cost repairs to buildings at £5 10s) ; Invercargill Middle (half cost gravelling and asphalting at £50.)

Tenders were recommended to be called for the following works :—Nightcaps (alterations to teacher’s residence) ; Woodlands (repairs to residence) ; Riverton (renewal of fence round grounds) ; Lower Hedgeliope (repairs and painting of school buildings.) WOBXS BECOUamNSED. Tin* committee recommended that the architect be instructed as follows : Bluff —To arrange at once for improvement to drainage of teacher', i -Idence ; Wallacetown—To arrange fur n ~„irs to teacher’s residence ; Otaulau—To prepare plans and specifications for an rddition lo school building, tenders to lie invited ; Riverside—To arrange for repairs to roof of school building ; Roslyn Bush—To report on an application for repairs to residence and half cost of renewal of fencing ; Waipounamu—To report on application for certain works us applied for by the school committee ; South Invercargill To supply usual furniture (table and chairs) to new infant department and teacher’s room ; Shotover Upper—To consider committee's application for supply of new stove : Greenhills—To report on committee's application for supply of a stove and for drainage and repairs to outbuildings ; Hedgehope Upper To supply three new desks and forms if on emjuiry such are found to be necessary : Invercargill South—To arrange for construction and supply of school furniture (desks and forms) for new infant room at the earliest possible date ; West Plains—To report on application for repairs to school .and residence ; Himu—To report on application for repairs to buildings and to supply a cess trap as applied for ; Winton—To supply two soil pans as applied for ; Taramoa—To report on application for material to erect a shelter shed, etc ; Waimahak;'.— To prepare plans and specifications for a teacher’s residence as per plan submitted lo and approved by the Department ; Greenhills—To supply and erect a stove in newly erected addition to school building. The committee recommend that the Inspectors be instructed as follows : Taramoa-—To report on application for supply of new gates when In district ; Chatton —To report on application for supply of new school furniture ; Gore —To consider and reply to the teacher’s request for information re admission to secondary department of pupils who are not entitled to free places ; Carolina —To report on a letter suggesting the removal of the school in this district to another site. STAFF REFOUT*. The reports .of the Board’s officers were received. It was recommended that the paragraph in Inspector Wyllie’s report containing a suggestion relative to the mailer of cleaning slates be referred to the architect for report with an estimate of the cost of the improvement suggested by the inspector. TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE. It was recommended that the secretary supply each member of the B«ard with a copy of the scheme for the grading and promotion of teachers submitted hy tlie Institute, and that further consideration of the matter be held over till the mid-monthly meeting of the Executive Committee in Hay. The letter asking for the establishment of Saturday training classes for teachers and pupil teachers was received, and it was recommended that the Institute he advised that the Board had to some extent anticipated their wishes hy the inauguration of ihe present Saturday classes for teachers, but that in the meantime the Board's finances would not permit of any further development in the direction indicated fn the proposal. The Institute, was informed that the Board had, at the present time, no intention of appointing an additional inspector. OTHER MATTER*. The lender of S. Morcton for repairs and painting the school at Arrow was accepted. Tins executive made the following recommendations : Colac Bay Native Children —That an intimation from the Department that the free supply of school books for native children is now discontinued he received and a copy thereof be sent to (lie headmaster of the school. Conveyance of Schoolchildren.—That the* application of th« petitioners in Riverside. Ciifden, and Hamilton Burn districts for conveyance allowance be forwarded lo the Department with a favourable recommendation. Waikaka School.—That the committee’s letter re selection of a school site he referred to .Mr Gilchirst lo visit the district and report. Wyndhani’s Application.—That in reply to the renewed application for the establishment of a District High School the school committee be informed that the Board cannot see its way to alter its previous decision, more especially in view of the propsed establishment of a High School at Gore. Waimakaka and Otautau. —That the intimation by the Department of a grant to cover the cost of the erection of a teacher's residence at Waimahaka, aad of an addition to the school building at Otautau respectfully, be received.

Arrowtown and Waikaia. —That the intimation by the Department of its approval of the usual grant for the conveyance of children to the .schools be received, and petitioners informed accordingly. Waikaka Old School —That the secretary be authorised to make application for the consent of the Minister of Education to the sale of the old school site and buildings in (be district. Bluff Sclioolliousv.—rtTlia-t- application bo made to the Minister fur bis consent to the sale of tha teacher's residence and site.

Tuturau Glebe.—That the teacher be informed .that no objection will be made to her leasing her school glebe during the pleasure of the Board, but not for any definite term. Waikonro Wants. —That in reply lo their letter om the subject the committee be informed that the Board cannot eee Its way to contribute towards tb* cost of erecting a second smelter shed

and of the erection of a dividing fence between the boys’ and girls’ playgrounds; and that the matter of erecting a teacher's residence be further held over. The report was adopted. Accounts to the amount of £3897 fis lid were passed for payment.
