Southland Land Board

THURSDAY, 30th APRIL. The monthly meeting was attended by the Commissioner (Mr E. H. Wilmot in the chair), and Messrs A. Kinross, Duncan King, James King, and John McLean. The Board was occupied all day hearing personal applications from tenants who had been “ called upon to show cause.” In several instances the applications were for transfers under the Lands for Settlement Act. which makes it obligatory on the transferee to appear before the Board and show that he is a suitable person to hold the laud. Several other tenants who had failed to comply with the conditions as to residence ami improvements were either granted exemption or an extension of time in which to comply.

APPLICATIONS* TOR LAND. Two sections were ballottcd for. The first was section 27, block S, Campbelltown Hundred, 65 acres. Tills area is situated near Woodend township, and is accessible by gravel road. The soli is described as fair, but wet and peaty in places, and part of it being abandoned sawmill areas it is lightly timbered in parts, and in parts also covered with scrub. There were two applicants, of whom (Mrs) Margaret Hudson was successful.

The other section was. No. 61, block S, Wlnton, 172 acres. This area is situated four miles from Llmehills railway station, and is accessible by a formed bush track. It is well watered ; the soil is fair to good ; is covered with light bush ; and is fairly well situated. There were thirty-three applicants. but the Board rejected two of them on the ground that they were not landless within the meaning of the Act. The section was allotted by ballot to George Hammond, of Llmehills. The Commissioner reported having inspected sections 13, 14 and 15, block 4. Barkly Village, in company with Messrs McKenzie and Perry and recommended the grunting of section 13 (less tramway to be deducted on survey! to Mr F. Perry under section 115 of “The Land Act, 1392” ; and that Mr O. McKenzie be allowed to remain in possession of section 14 so long as ins mill on section 15 is working.—Mr " • Macalister appeared in support of the application for the same section from W. G. McKenzie, who desired to have the section in order to got access to his house.—Resolved that section 13 be sold at auction.

The following were recommended for the approval of the Minister ;—Section 23, block 8, Waiau S.D., Merrivale settlement, 357 acres — R. C. Scott to Reginald Owens; section 25, block S, Winton Hundred, 20 acres— Mrs I. McD. Nlcolson to James Watson: section 7, block 10, Walkaka district, 40 acres 12 poles—Samuel Scott to James Scott: section 30a. block 6, Wyndham S. Glenham settlement, 100 acres — Wm. Kirkor to C. S. Gabites. Several applications were refused Pastoral run 329, Hokonui S.D.. 3300 acres—Wm. Hales to Barnhill and Macdonald ; pa«toral run 207 a, Hokonui S.D., 3879 acres Wm. Hales to Barnhill and Macdonald: section 15, block S, Winton Hundred. 93 acres 2 roods—Miss 13. Small to Geo. Bye: section 37E. block 10. Lindhurst Hundred. Edendale settlement. 365 acres—(half interest) H. T. Marshall to X. K. Marshall : section 3, block 3. Seaward Bush township, 5 acres 14 poles— Charles Greig to J. H. Chester; sections 1 and 3, Seaward Bush township, 10 acres 3roods 3 poles—John Burke to J. H. Chester. Two applications were held over: —Section 3, block 41, Taringatura S.D.. 198 acres Irood 34 poles— James Kennard to Payne and Pettigrew (transfer of two-thirds interest held over for further report): section 20, block 8, Campbelltown Hundred. 50 acres 23 poles—Wm, Park to Joint Fraser (held over for attendance of parties.)
