N.Z. Coast Defence
AUSTRALIAN COMMENT. By Telegraph.-Press Association.—Copyright. SYDNEY. April 30. The Herald says the New Zealand proposal to encourage building of sea-going yachts with * view lo their use for ''il defence purposes is generally regarded in local naval circles as having more hunvur than utility. Commander Brownin'.'-. State Naval Commandanl, says ; “ Looking at tho proposal as it appears in Hie paper, and not being in possession of further data, it certainly seems to me to he impracticable as far as defence is concerned. Auxiliary vessels with -inch a speed are of no use whatever for purposes of coastal defence, and oven boats built for racing would be no use. The only vessels that could be used for the purposes 'of defence in this respect would be up-to-date destroyers or vessels of the scout cla«B. The New Zealand suggestion is evidently with a view to co-opera-tion In time of war between the Commonwealth and dominion, but a proper wireless telegraph system would be of more benefit than any combination of yacht clubs to provide vessels."
