Hockey Club played a practice match on the Teviot street: grounds yesterday afternoon. Then? was a large attendance of members from which sides wore chosen by the Captain and Deputy Captain. The play on the whole showed n decided improvement in the knowledge of the rules and In the general play. The match resulted in a win for the Deputy Captain's team by 8 goals to 4. Mr. W. J. Martin made an efficient referee. I.H.C. PRACTICE. A very successful practice match, President v. Vice President, was held yesterday afternoon when come twenty-five members turned out for an afternoon’s exercise. Messrs J. L. McQ. Watson and J. T. Brain bullied off, and an even contest resulted. Much Improvement was shown by the players since last week, both in individual play and knowledge of the game, though there la still a strong tendency shown to raise the stick above the shoulders, and penalties were frequent for this infringement. At half time the V.P.'a had secured two goals to their opponents' nil. In the second spell some excellent play but the President’s side, although scoring Iwlce, was not able to prevent a further score by the V.P.’s, who eventually won by four goals to two. Good form was shows by Hartley. Macgregor, Inglls, Wilcox, and Earl while Praln and Burke were towers of strength to their sides at full back. Several visitors were provided with sticks and the fast and open game was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Quite a number of spectators were on the ground during the afternoon, and appeared V»ry interested n U*e game progressed. GOLF. OPENING OF I.G.C. SEASON. The Invercargill Golf Club opened the sea son yesterday with a mixed foursome competition. The course and greens were in splendid order and a most enjoyable day was spent.
